What is an APK File?

APK stands for “Android application package”. The .apk format is used to compress and distribute Android apps.

When users download an Android app, they actually download an APK file. After the download is finished, the device automatically unpacks the file and installs the app.

The counterpart to the APK file on iOS is the IPA file.
